Event Overview
The evening of Saturday, May 17th, 2025, brought families, runners, animal lovers, and their furry companions together under the stars for the spectacular Run for a Pawpose 5K. Held at North Forsyth High School in Cumming, Georgia, this joyful event was much more than a race. Benefiting the Forsyth County Jail’s Pups with Purpose training program, the Run for a Pawpose 5K served as both a celebration of community spirit and an impactful fundraiser for a unique cause.
From the lively 5K run to kid-friendly activities and wagging tails everywhere, the event captured hearts and raised significant funds for a mission that changes lives—not just for dogs, but for the people who care for them. Here’s a look at how the day unfolded and why it left such a lasting impact.
A Race with a Purpose
The primary goal of the Run for a Pawpose 5K was to support the Pups with Purpose program, an initiative that pairs rescue dogs with inmates at the Forsyth County Jail. The program gives carefully selected inmates the opportunity to foster and train homeless dogs, teaching them obedience and social skills. After graduating, the dogs are placed up for adoption, fully trained, and ready to thrive in loving homes. At the same time, inmates develop critical social and vocational skills, helping them reintegrate into society with confidence and purpose.
This innovative partnership between the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and professional trainers has helped alleviate overcrowding in shelters, prepare dogs for adoption, and transform the lives of inmates. By hosting the Run for a Pawpose 5K, the community came together to provide additional resources, training supplies, and support for this remarkable initiative.

The event started with an enthusiastic crowd gathering for packet pick-up under the Big Peach Tent. The excitement in the air was palpable as over 300 participants geared up for the 5K race, the Kids Fun Run, and the Doggie Run. Each of the race categories catered to a different audience, ensuring the event was as inclusive as possible.
- 5K Race (7:00 PM): Runners and their dogs hit the scenic course that looped around the well-lit campus. Amid cheers from onlookers, participants of all skill levels sprinted, jogged, and even walked their way to the finish line.
- Kids Fun Run (8:00 PM): This dog-free race was all about energetic youngsters under 10 tearing up the course, many of them experiencing the thrill of their first race.
- Doggie Run (Part of 5K): Registered dogs accompanied by humans proudly sported custom race bandanas and brought an added layer of joy to the evening. Their wagging tails and enthusiastic spirit were a highlight of the event.
Participants received race T-shirts and finisher medals to commemorate the occasion, while winners across various age groups and categories enjoyed awards such as Overall Male/Female and Overall Masters Male/Female.
Community Engagement and Impact
One of the most inspiring aspects of the night was the overwhelming support from the local community. The event brought together people from all walks of life—including families, pet enthusiasts, sponsors, and volunteers—to champion the shared cause.
Participants had the opportunity to engage with local vendors offering pet products, food, and more. A festive atmosphere, fueled by music and the buzzing excitement of children and pets alike, kept spirits high all evening. The crowd celebrated not only the runners but also the impact they were making on the lives of rescue dogs and inmates enrolled in the Pups with Purpose program.
A Successful Fundraising Effort
The funds raised during the Run for a Pawpose 5K will directly benefit the training program, enabling it to provide critical resources like veterinary care, obedience training equipment, and grooming supplies. Each donation and every registration fee contributed to ensuring that more dogs receive the opportunity to find loving homes while inmates gain valuable life skills.
The Heart of the Pups with Purpose Program
The Pups with Purpose program’s mission goes far beyond rehabilitating dogs. It also aims to rehabilitate the individuals training them. Through hands-on mentorship and volunteer instruction, inmates learn to focus on others, develop patience, and take pride in their work. These skills can be life-changing when they transition back into society.
Meanwhile, the dogs in the program are given a second chance at life. They undergo socialization and training to make them better companions and prepare them for adoption. This partnership strengthens the bond between humans and animals and creates a ripple effect of transformation that extends throughout the community.
A Memorable Night and a Brighter Future
The Run for a Pawpose 5K wasn’t just another race; it was an unforgettable evening filled with smiles, laughter, and wagging tails. The event left a profound impact, raising awareness about the needs of rescue animals and the innovative ways communities can make a difference. Thanks to the effort of organizers, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, local sponsors, and an engaged community, the night exemplified the power of compassion and teamwork.
Alpha Pet Waste Removal, a trusted provider of pet waste removal services, played a key role in ensuring the event remained clean and enjoyable for all participants.
Though this year’s event is over, its mission continues. The Pups with Purpose program remains a beacon of hope for dogs and inmates alike, and its growth depends on ongoing support from people like you.
